Antoine Tzapoff (B. 1945) is a Parisian painter with a lifetime fascination with the Indians of North America, a fascination that drove him to study his subject matter as closely as he did his craft. Thus, his work is not only technically skillful with crisp lines, rich visual textures, and masterful blends of vibrant color, but also incorporates imagery that is ethnographically true to its subject. A hunter, whether Crow from Montana, Seminole from Florida, or Tarahumara from Mexico is sure to be shown in resplendent attire true to his tribe. Tzapoff is an artist of great energy and his work brings this out in stunning force. His canvases explode with color, bright Indian subjects against natural backdrops that frame the figures in the majesty of the natural world. His portraits, therefore, shy away from the staid interior scenes others favor. Tzapoff's view is of a vibrant people in surroundings equal to their splendor. Tzapoff had six years of formal art study in Paris. His work has been exhibited there at the Duperier and Alain Blondel galleries. In the United States, galleries such as the Smith Gallery in New York have had shows for Tzapoff's creations. Two countries, Mexico and France, have had state-sponsored exhibitions of his work under the supervision of their respective cultural affairs ministries. The show in Mexico, "When Dance Becomes Rite," was held at the Palacia de Mineria in 1988, where it earned the distinction of garnering the highest attendance of any cultural art exhibit in Mexico's history. A show of the same title was also offered in Paris, where it was displayed at the La Maison de l'Amerique Latine in 1997. |
